The One New Year’s Goal That Actually Makes Life Easier
A calendar can help keep you organized
As the year winds down, there’s the usual shift in focus to creating new goals. Fresh starts. Big plans. Grand ideas.
But honestly, I’m not there yet. Before I think about what I want to add next year, I’ve been sitting with something a bit quieter, and honestly, more useful. I’ve been asking myself what didn’t work.
Instead of asking what to add, I’m noticing what didn’t work - and choosing not to carry it forward.
This isn’t about judgment. It’s about listening.

There were routines that looked great on the calendar, but felt heavy in real life. Commitments I kept out of habit, but noticed they were unnecessary for me in reality. Expectations - some mine, some borrowed - that added stress and resentment without giving much back.
When something repeatedly drains you, that’s information. When a routine never settles, that’s information. When a goal keeps resurfacing but never truly sticks, that’s information too.
The new year doesn’t need a reinvention. It needs honesty.
And honesty sounds like this:
This didn’t work for me.
I don’t need to justify letting go.
This didn’t work for our family.
I don’t need permission to trust myself.
We can leave this behind, and it’s ok.
For many of us, especially moms, there’s a tendency to override what we know. We assume discomfort means we should push harder. We assume consistency means repeating the same thing, even when it doesn’t seem to feel aligned with our life.
Consistency without alignment leads to burnout.

The year showed me where my energy naturally flows, and where it drains. It showed me what supports my family and what quietly creates anxiety. It showed me the difference between growth and grind.
This isn’t about lowering my expectations. It’s about choosing ones that actually belong to this season of not only my life, but my family's too.
Until next time, enjoy the journey!
