The Ordinary Parts of Family Life I Didn’t Expect to Miss
One day I’ll miss the toys strewn showing my kids are having fun
There’s a lot of pressure in motherhood to treasure the big moments.
The milestones. The firsts. The memories you’re supposed to frame or post or remember forever.
But lately, I’ve realized it’s not those moments that linger with me the most.
It’s the ordinary parts of family life, the ones that don’t feel special while they’re happening. The background noise. The routines. The small interruptions that fill our days and sometimes test our patience.
These are the moments I didn’t expect to miss.
Not because they’re perfect.
But because they’re familiar.
This season of family life is busy, loud, and often messy. And while I know it won’t last forever, I’m starting to notice how much of it I’ll want to remember—not the highlight reel, but the everyday moments that quietly hold us together.
The Way They Call for Me From Another Room
Not because something is wrong or urgent. Simply because they want to tell me something right now.
A random fact.
A joke that can’t wait.
A thought that popped into their head and absolutely must be shared immediately.
It’s constant.
It’s distracting.
And somehow, it’s also one of the things I know I’ll miss.
One day, they won’t call for me just to talk.
Right now, they still want me nearby - and that matters more than I realized.

Shoes That Appear Everywhere Except the Shoe Rack
By the front door.
In the hallway.
One (just one) under the dining table.
Mysteriously in places I swear no one has walked.
It drives me crazy.
And yet…
It means everyone is home.
It means the house is being lived in.
Someday, the floors will be clearer.
And I have a feeling the quiet will feel heavier than the mess ever was.
The Background Noise of Our Evenings
Someone talking over the TV.
Someone else laughing from another room.
The constant shuffle of movement, sound, and life.
It’s not calm.
It’s not quiet.
It’s not ‘gram-worthy.
But it’s full.
This is what family life actually sounds like, and I know there will be a day when I miss this exact level of chaos.
The Questions That Come at the Worst Possible Times
Right when I sit down to enjoy my coffee.
Right when I start a thought.
Right when I’m finally focused.
“Can you please help me?”
“Where is that thing?”
“Did you know…?”
It’s endless.
And yet, I won’t always be the default person with the answers.
I won’t always be the one they come to first.
That realization hits harder than I expected.
The Ordinary Routines We Don’t Even Name
The way bedtime never looks the same twice.
The familiar rhythm of school nights and weekends.
The routines we never planned but somehow kept.
Nothing about these moments feels special while they’re happening.
They’re just part of the day.
But one day, they’ll be the things I wish I could step back into—just for a moment.

The Version of Them That Only Exists Right Now
The phrases they say constantly.
The interests they’re obsessed with this week.
The humor that makes no sense to anyone else.
This version of them is temporary.
And while I know change is coming, and growth is good, there’s something about this stage that I want to remember exactly as it is.
The Way Time Feels Full (Even When It’s Messy)
These days aren’t always easy.
They’re loud. They’re busy. They’re emotionally full.
Not productive-full.
Not perfectly-balanced-full.
Just full of everyday life.
And even on the hard days, I know I’m living inside a season I’ll look back on someday and miss in ways I can’t yet explain.
I don’t need to cherish every second.
I don’t need to pretend it’s all magical.
I just want to notice a few more of these moments while they’re still happening.
Because one day, I’ll miss the things I didn’t even realize I was living through.
Until next time, enjoy the journey!
